What Are CV Axles and Driveshafts?
CV axles (Constant Velocity axles) are the shafts that transfer power from the transmission or differential to the wheels. In front-wheel-drive vehicles, they run from the transaxle to each front wheel. In AWD vehicles, there are typically four CV axles — one at each wheel.
Each CV axle has joints at each end covered by rubber boots filled with grease. When the boots crack or tear, the grease escapes and dirt enters the joint — quickly destroying the joint's internal bearings and races.
Driveshafts serve a similar purpose in rear-wheel-drive and 4WD vehicles, transferring torque from the transmission or transfer case to the rear axle. They use U-joints (universal joints) instead of CV joints, and they can cause vibration when the U-joints wear.

CV Boot vs. Full Axle Replacement — What Do You Need?
If a CV boot tears early and is caught before the joint loses its grease, a boot replacement alone may save the joint. However, once the clicking starts, the joint itself is worn and a complete axle replacement is the correct fix. In most cases, a complete replacement axle shaft (boot and joints as an assembly) is only slightly more expensive than a boot-only repair and lasts significantly longer.
